Digital Thread and Digital Twin Revealed:
An Interactive Exhibit Presented by AFRL
As information technology and computing power have advanced and improved over the years, modeling and simulation tools, sophisticated analytical capabilities, and data analytics have increased in importance throughout a product’s lifecycle. For the U.S. DoD, two concepts born in the Science & Technology realm -- Digital Thread and Digital Twin -- are changing the way weapon systems are developed and maintained throughout their lifecycle, taking advantage of artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, physics, and probabilistic techniques to transform decision making.
- An AFRL engineer runs the mixed-reality Digital Thread demonstration using the Microsoft Hololens and Artist's Renderings of the use of the Hololens for field-level maintenance.
"Digital Thread and Digital Twin Revealed" will take DMC attendees inside these two concepts with a focus on military aircraft development, lifecycle management, and sustainment.
The "Digital Thread and Digital Twin Revealed" Exhibit will provide an introduction to DT/DTw and an overview of how DT/DTw applies in each part of the acquisition lifecycle. It will describe the key components of DT/DTw in the areas of Concept Development; Design and Developmental Test & Evaluation; Production; and Operation and Sustainment. In each lifecycle area, detailed examples will describe enabling Science & Technology developments and their impact on the enterprise. Key collaborations and successes will be highlighted and remaining challenges and technology gaps will be identified.
AFRL experts will be on hand to interact with attendees. Participants will be able to delve deeper into the underlying technologies and their impact on activities such as Airworthiness Certification, Sustainment, and Logistics/Supply Chain Management by following one or more specific ‘threads’ through the entire lifecycle via tailored, guided tours. Attendees will have the chance to experience firsthand how augmented reality technology can exploit the DT to connect humans to information in an intuitive, user-friendly manner by taking AFRL’s interactive, mixed-reality DT demonstration for a test drive using Microsoft’s Hololens device.
